Breakwater’s after-school programs are open to all children (grades K–8) in the Greater Portland area. We offer a unique opportunity to self-design your child’s after-school experience by supplementing our AfterCare program (grades K-5) and Action Room Program (grades 5-8) with selections from our dynamic and diverse Enrichment classes. Our staff is made up of experienced and engaging teacher-learners who have a passion for what they do and are eager to work with curious minds. Come join our community of enthusiastic athletes, passionate artists and performers, and most of all, good friends. AfterCareOur AfterCare Program runs from 3:00 to 5:30 each day, from 12:00 to 5:30 on half-day Wednesdays, and from 2:05 to 5:30 on Portland Public School early release Wednesdays from October to May. This program provides a safe, well-supervised environment for self-chosen activities and indoor/outdoor free-play with friends. Based in the Daniel Crewe Building ("The Dan"), the AfterCare Program takes full advantage of the School's facilities, including our gym, playgrounds, and athletic fields. Children may participate in craft projects, play chess and other popular board games, play four-square on the blacktop, or take advantage of some quiet time to read. While we offer healthy snacks each afternoon, we will encourage your child to revisit his or her lunchbox in an effort not to waste food. EnrichmentOur Enrichment Programs run on six-week cycles, five times throughout the year. Some classes remain constant while others are continually rotating. From LEGO Robotics and Odyssey of the Mind to theater, art, athletics, and aerial trapeze, there's something to pique everyone's interests. Children whose parents are not able to pick them up at the end of their class may return to AfterCare or the Action Room until 5:30. The Action RoomThe Action Room is a unique student workspace, dedicated to supporting middle school students throught the development and execution of authentic, self-driven projects. Under the guidance of Breakwater teacher Max Conover and with access to experts in various fields, students will make the space their own, pursuing their curiosities and learning how to confront the questions and issues that come along with engaging in real-world projects. The primary learning goal of this space is action: how effectively does each student motivate his or herself to action and how can she or he improve at that ability? Open to all middle schoolers from the Greater Portland area, The Action Room's uncommon balance of academic independence and individualized support is especially effective with highly active, highly creative students. The Saturday ProgramSaturdays At Breakwater is designed to keep curious minds energized and engaged (even after the school week is through) on Saturday mornings from 9:00am to 12:45pm. Our primary program is open to active and inquisitive kids ages 7-12 from the Greater Portland area. Our classes range from bustling outdoor and tinkering-based activities, to serene art and yoga classes. Also, our Early Childhood program is open to young dancers and storytellers, ages 3 to 6. The program is designed to utilize built-in community time to foster a strong sense of community in our program, and in the Greater Portland area. TransportationTransportation to Breakwater from Hall, Ocean Avenue, Levey Day, Longfellow, and East End Community School is available Monday through Friday. Our bus seats fill fast, some days more than others. We encourage early registration as a spot on one of our vehicles is available on a first-come, first-served basis. |
