Overview
Breakwater’s Toddler Program provides a joyful place for children and their parents or caregivers to learn, create friendships, and have fun! Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education, our program is designed to introduce toddlers to children of similar ages, to the concept of “school,” and to the world beyond family. The classroom maintains a teacher/child ratio of 1:4.
Facilitated by two experienced early childhood teachers, classes include both free play (in and out-of-doors) and structured, hands-on activities designed to engage the developmental interests of toddlers. Parents, grandparents or caregivers are always welcome to stay, too.
Schedule
The toddler program runs year-round, Monday through Friday, from 8:45 am to 11:45 am (half day) or 2:45 pm (full day) Parents may enroll their child for three or five half or full day options. For families who need full-day childcare, Toddler Early Care is available from 8:00 to 8:45 am, and Toddler Enrichment extended care is available from 2:45 to 3:30 pm. The program follows Breakwater’s calendar and weather cancelations. Click here to preview a typical day in our Toddler Room.
Ages
Breakwater’s toddler program is designed for children ages 18-36 months. Children should be at least 18 months by the start of their first session.
Curriculum
Each week, teachers thoughtfully plan an environment that incorporates free play and age-appropriate educational materials to support children as they learn to share, respect others, and build friendships. We focus specifically on fostering the development of children’s receptive and expressive language skills and guide them in expressing their needs and ideas. Each morning includes active play, either outdoors or in the school gymnasium. Mid-morning, we gather for singing, movement, and story time, followed by a healthy snack.
One of our primary objectives is to help children prepare to separate from their parents. Our program is thoughtfully designed to minimize the anxiety that separation can bring and to foster the joy and excitement of newfound independence. Children gain confidence as they engage with classroom materials, peers, and other adults and then share these experiences with their parent, who stays with them during the first days or weeks of class. Through rituals, consistency, and the support of nurturing teachers, children become comfortable in their surroundings and open to separating from their parent for brief periods of time. These periods are gradually and intentionally increased, developing each child’s confidence and independence.
