Dear Friends and Families,

Welcome to Breakwater — a unique independent school located in Portland, Maine. People are often curious about the origin of our school and of the name, “Breakwater.” Our founder, Eleanor “El” Costa, envisioned that just as a breakwater can help provide a safe harbor for ships while they are preparing to head back out to sea, a school should provide that same feeling of comfort and security for children while they are learning the skills, concepts, and knowledge that will optimize their ability to navigate the rest of their lives. This “safe haven” metaphor guides the very essence of our School.

Our community has evolved and flourished since El and her husband Frank started the school, and those founding, fundamental tenets have strengthened as they are continually woven through the fabric of the school culture. We provide this ‘safe harbor’ as we explore best practices for instruction and reflect on what is most important for children to know and do.

We hope that you will visit us soon to see our programs in action and find out first-hand what the excitement is all about!

Sincerely,

David Sullivan
Head of School
