Breakwater’s campus comprises three buildings nestled into the corner of Capisic Street and Brighton Avenue in Portland. We share this “pizza slice” of the city with the Nason’s Corner Park, soon to be renovated as part of a collaborative greening project. We are fortunate that our back yard not only encompasses our on-site garden and playgrounds, but also extends to include Capisic Pond and the Fore River Sanctuary (both just a short stroll away) and the Jessie Bullens-Crewe Nature Preserve, our 21-acre nature preserve in Cumberland.
The Main Building
Known to many as “The Brick Building,” this three-story building is home to our main office, library, and administrative offices as well as our Early Childhood and Grades 1-6 classrooms. The World Language classroom is also housed on the second floor, and the Media Sky Lounge, Visual Arts Studio, and Music/Performing Arts classroom complete the top floor.
The Daniel N. Crewe Building
“The Dan” holds our gymnasium, a 20-foot-high vertical climbing wall, and a 40-foot-long traverse rock climbing wall along with administrative offices and our AfterCare Program.
The Jessie Bullens-Crewe Building
“The Jessie” contains our auditorium, Middle School Grades 7-8 classrooms, and administrative offices.
The Jessie Bullens-Crewe Nature Preserve
“Jessie Land,” the School’s 21-acre nature preserve, is located off I-295 in Cumberland, just a 15-minute drive from campus. When our students visit Jessie Land, the preserve is transformed into an outdoor science lab, a woodland amphitheater, or a magical land of forts and fairy houses. Whether students are engaged in an Outdoor Adventure challenge or a biology experiment, Jessie Land is always the perfect place for children of all ages to explore and discover the world’s natural wonders.
Playgrounds
Our Early Childhood students play in a safe, fenced-in area reserved for and geared specifically toward toddlers and preschoolers. Our older children play hopscotch and four-square on the pavement in front of the Main Building, climb and slide on the playground, and play tag or sports on the adjacent recreational fields.
Breakwater’s playgrounds will soon undergo a greening renovation as part of the Nason’s Corner Park Community Playground Greening Project, a collaborative initiative of Breakwater, the City of Portland, and the Portland Trails School Ground Greening Coalition.
